Library Cards

  1. Residents of Cabarrus County and Rowan County may register for a library card free of charge upon presentation of a NC Driver’s License, permit, or Department of Motor Vehicles ID card showing their current local address. If their Driver’s License, permit, or DMV ID card does not have the correct address, they may get a card with restricted checkout privileges (limit one restricted resident card per family) if they present a utility bill, telephone bill, rent receipt, checkbook, or some other official documentation (no cancelled mail) that does show the correct local address in addition to an official picture ID (Military ID, Passport, out–of–state Driver’s License, etc.).

  2. A child may register for a library card at age 5. A parent or legal guardian must sign for the child and must have a NC Driver’s License, permit, or NC Department of Motor Vehicles ID showing the correct local address. Individual cards cannot be issued to children if their parent/guardian does not have an official NC Department of Motor Vehicles ID showing the correct address. Children must accompany their parent/guardian in order to get a library card.

  3. Residents of counties adjacent to Cabarrus County (Mecklenburg, Stanly, Union, and Iredell) may get a card for an annual fee of $15.00 (effective 7–1–09). They will need to present the same identification as residents of Cabarrus County (see #1)

  4. Internet Only Cards and Guest Cards for internet use are also available for residents who do not have any current identification showing their local address or for visitors who do not live in Cabarrus County and would like to use the internet. An official picture ID (driver’s license, passport, etc.) is sufficient to get an Internet Only or Guest Card regardless of the address on that ID.

  5. If a patron’s library card is lost or stolen, the patron should notify the library immediately because that patron is financially responsible for all items checked out on that card until it is reported lost/stolen.

  6. In order to replace a lost/stolen library card, a patron must present a picture ID. A child who has lost his card will need to verify his registration information on file with the library. If that child cannot verify the information, the card cannot be replaced. Cost to replace lost cards is $1.00 for the first lost card, $3.00 for the second lost card, and $5.00 for each additional lost card after that (effective 7–1–09).
